Ingredients (Serves 4-5 people)

Procedure

  1. Step 1

    Take a cooker, on a medium flame add 1 tbsp of Oil and butter and let it heat up. Then add 1 tsp cumin and wait till it crackles.

    Now add cubic chopped Potatoes, beetroot and carrot. Also add 3/4 cup green peas. Mix it well. Add 1 tbsp of Pavbhaji masala and 1/2 tsp salt and mix.

    Now add 2 cups of water and cover the lid. Let it give 5-6 whistles on a low-medium flame.

  4. Step 4

    After it’s cooked, you have to mash the mixture with a potato masher very well and keep it aside.

    Now take a kadhai and add 2 tsp of oil and 1 tbsp of butter in it. Let it heat up. Keep a medium flame. Then add 1 larger finely chopped onion and 1 tbsp of ginger garlic paste.

  6. Step 6

    Saute the onions for 2-3 minutes till they turn translucent and pink. Now add 1 large finely chopped tomato and cook for 3-4 minutes. Now add 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder and 2 tbsp of pav bhaji masala. Mix all of this very well and cook for 1-2 minutes. 

  7. Step 7

    Now add 1 medium finely chopped capsicum in it. Mix it well for 3-4 minutes. 

  8. Step 8

    Before the next step, mash this mixture roughly with a potato masher. Now add the mashed vegetables to it. 

  9. Step 9

    Mix this very well till everything comes together. Check for salt according to your taste, add some coriander leaves and 1 tbsp Butter to it. Add 1 cup water and let it boil for 5-6 minutes.

  10. Your pav Bhaji is ready to be served.

How to get red color in Pav Bhaji Masala?

The Beetroot and carrots will bring out the red color in Pav bhaji. Most street vendors also add food color in their recipes. If you want to skip both, you can soak 5-6 kashmiri red chillies in hot water for 30 minutes and blend them into a fine paste. Add in prepared pav bhaji.

How to substitute Pav Bhaji Masala?

If at all you don’t have pav bhaji masala available or don’t want to use it, you can add a pinch of garam masala, Dhana powder and Amchur powder. The flavor won’t be the same but still will taste good.

How to make Pav bhaji without onion and garlic?

You can simply skin adding both of them. You don’t have to Substitute them with anything else.
